Resources for Authors

As a writer myself, I want to share some resources that have helped me along my journey.

Writing With Color

Writing With Color is a blog on Tumblr that has resources about writing non-white characters. The blog has lessons about stereotypes in writing, suggestions for descriptors, and a forum for people to submit questions about their stories. I’ve found this resource to be incredibly helpful when thinking about how to avoid stereotypes and write richly diverse worlds.

Save the Cat

If you’re new to plotting, Save the Cat is an excellent resource to learn the basics of structure and character arc. I’ve read other books about structure, but none make it as clear and easy to understand as Save the Cat. This guide is also helpful for working through structural issues in books that are already written.

Storygrid

Storygrid is an editing philosophy that focuses heavily on movement in the story. Some of my methods for creating an editorial analysis are inspired by Storygrid’s approach to visualizing the structure and movement of a book.

Scribophile

Scribophile is what sparked my interest in professional editing. It is a critique exchange site where authors can receive critiques on their writing. This website is an excellent networking tool to find other authors and readers in your genre.

Hello Future Me

Hello Future Me is a useful resource for all things worldbuilding and fantasy. This YouTube channel goes over topics such as magic systems, economic systems, and writing techniques, including analyses of existing media such as Avatar: The Last Airbender to facilitate these discussions.
